'The World is our Classroom' is an online global Project, involving classrooms from all around the world. It's aims are three-fold:

  • Communication - Open up communication with a culture and people different to ourselves.

  • Collaboration - Work as a Team to share and compare information.

  • Computer skills development - Plan and develop a Website to showcase learning.

Who can participate?

Any classroom or Home School may participate. All students from K-12 are eligible for participating in the "The World is our Classroom' Project. Once your classroom has registered, teachers may contact other classrooms to join them in establishing a 'virtual classroom'. Ideally you will form a 'virtual classroom' with two other classrooms from different countries.

Why participate? : The World is our Classroom Project gives classrooms from all around the world the opportunity to join together and experience collaboration on an international scale. It goes farther than other online activities where students only exchange self introductions and introduce their lifestyles to each other. Beyond that, in the Virtual Classroom, students will work to achieve a common goal of creating a Web site. Participating students will need to learn to rely on each other and overcome their cultural and language differences in order to produce an informative website.

Participation Time : January 1st, 2003 - June 1st, 2003

Registration Period : December 1st, 2002 - March 1st, 2003. No Registrations will be processed after March 1st, 2003.

Form of Participation : Once a classroom has established a 'virtual classroom' with others, teachers will discuss with their students a focus / theme for their collaboration. Communication can be achieved via email, web pages, tele-conferencing, chat rooms (moderated by teachers), and with multi-media presentations. The group of schools will come together over the Internet to create a virtual learning environment. Every week, students will share information, learn about cultural differences etc., and then plan and design a web site for judging.

Judging : The judging of the web sites will take place on June 4-5th, 2003. Elementary and High School web sites will be judged in separate categories.Cash and Book prize winners will be announced on

http://www.gigglepotz.com on June 6th, 2003.
