8th Grade - Unit 4 – The Development of America’s regions Chapter 8 – The West. You will produce a Culture Box that will include: * 1. The Mission Goals and Instructions for Captain Lewis. Include a US Map for 1810. 2.7 Items the Explorers presented to the Indians. 3. ‘Old’ letters written by Lewis about what he found. 4. Make a tape of where the following explored: Mountain men / Jedediah Smith / General Pike / Kit Carson. 5. Include a Mini-Dictionary of the following words : expansionist, buffer zone, annex, rendezvous, continental divide, Manifest Destiny. * 6. Using Page 231 – Write a front page Newspaper article titled: ‘US Settlers Welcomed’. * 7. Make a Radio News tape of either: ‘The Battle of the Alamo’ OR ‘War with Mexico’. 8. Write a Diary entry of what life was like settling in the West. The Diary can be written by a ‘Mormon’ or a ‘Spaniard’. 9. Make a Poster advertising the Gold Rush in California. Be sure to include – 1. How to get there. 2. Equipment needed. 3. Camps to live in. 4. Hardships. * 10. Design a set of maps. Map 1 – Map of US in 1810. Map 2 – Map of the Explorer Routes from 1804 – 1845 Map 3 – Map of the US, after the Mexican cession – 1853. Include with the set of maps. Explanations for differences in all Maps. Instructions: The Culture Box needs to be decorated with examples of the development of the West. There are 4 Compulsory Activities, indicated by * These MUST be completed. Your Team may choose 3 other Activities to include in the Culture Box. A TOTAL of 7 Objects need to be placed in the Culture Box. You will work with up to 3 people in a Team. Each person will have a role to play and information to research. Each Team will have a Leader who will ensure that your Team is on task. The Leader will record an ‘On Task’ number each day. (10 being the highest and 1 being the lowest rating) The Culture Box needs to include all names of the Team members and Grade level. The Culture Box is due 1 week after receiving this Project sheet. All information can be found in Chapter8 – Unit 4 (The West), Social Studies text Book. Information may also be obtained on the Internet, but must be put into your own words. ‘Cut and Paste’ will not be accepted in any Activities.
