Listening is the first key. *Physical gestures and pictures are used a lot *Lessons focuses on acquiring a listening vocabulary and on developing listening comprehension. *Vocabulary is best taught by a thematic approach using whole language techniques. Games: Where's my Partner?- Match pictures or facts Line-ups Role Playing Use these: demonstration / pantomime / pictures / visual aids/ illustrating Students can match pictures,illustrate vocabulary, point to pictures for an answer, answer yes or no to questions. |

EARLY PRODUCTION- NON ENGLISH PROFICIENT |

* Students are beginning to understand. Communication occurs in one or two word responses. Lessons focus on increasing listening, vocabulary, and comprehension. * Lessons are taught by using some of these activities: ABC books/ picture dictionary Cut and Paste Draw and Remember Draw and Describe Concentration Demonstration Pantomime Illustration Charades Role playing Charts, tables, maps, timelines, photo Students can point to correct picture or answer, answer yes or no questions, give one or two word answers. Survival English skills are taught: telephone number, address Vocabulary: Where is the bathroom? I need help. I'm thirsty. May I get a drink?/ etc. |

SPEECH EMERGENCE- NON ENGLISH PROFICIENT |

*Student's listening vocabulary is larger than speaking vocabulary, can answer in phrases, words and simple sentences, can discuss concrete subject matter *Patterns and frames help increase skill. Student ready to study concrete content subjects. *Lessons can include: all the previous activities plus new activities: categorizing preference ranking games cause/effect compare/contrast sequence prediction Students draw instead of writing/ are beginning to label with simple sentences.: Students can participate in discussions, answer in longer phrases and in complete sentences.

INTERMEDIATE PRODUCTION- LIMITED ENGLISH PROFICIENT |

*Original words and ideas... more abstract ideas can be discussed. *Reading and writing activities: writing using frames echo and choral reading reader's theater negative statements questioning verb forms prepositional phrase comparatives who, did what, when, why, where compare/contrast cause/effect predict Remember it takes 7 years to reach academic fluency!
