Social Studies - Checklist -Grade 4

The Social Studies Checklist can be used by the Teacher and the Student, to monitor progress during the year. Assessment and reults can be written in and even a parent signature if appropriate.

The Democratic Process :
1. I am developing a responsibility for my own actions and decisions
2. I am developing conflict resolution skills
3. I can identify the responsibilities of an American citizen
4. I have used the voting process to make appropriate classroom decisions
5. I am able to identify community problems and discuss solutions
6. I recognize the lawful process for working toward change
7. I am able to explain the democratic process
The similarities and differences among cultures : I am able to -
1. describe California native culture
2. describe immigration to California
3. Identify and compare cultures of countries represented in California
4. Recognize the interdependence of states and countries
5. Recognize the effects of racial and cultural prejudice on California immigrants
6. Explain the role and contributions of women and minorities in the arts, sciences and sports.
Students will use critical thinking, research and communication skills – I am able to :
1. prepare an oral and visual presentation based on research
2. use a variety of reference resources correctly
3. use the interview process as a form of research
4. identify and sequence important events
5. construct and interpret a time line
6. distinguish fact, fiction and opinion
7. identify and highlight the main idea in a paragraph
8. use skills to compare and contrast
9. interpret charts, graphs, tables and diagrams
Students will understand the relationship between Geography and History in the development of a region. I am able to :
1. demonstrate how people affect environment
2. demonstrate how environment affects people
3. recognize the impact of Spanish colonization on the history of California
4. recognize the impact of migration on the history of California
5. recognize social and geographic evolution from village to town to city
6. discuss current events that affect our state
7. explain how the physical environment affected settlement
8. identify the importance of natural resources in our state
9. explain how climate affects life in a region
Students will demonstrate geographic literacy I am able to :
1. use and understand a variety of maps
2. locate states, countries, continents on a map
3. describe the physical geography of California
4. construct a map of California
5. describe and locate the major regions of California
6. trace the major migration routes to California
7. compare different types of maps
8. locate and identify specific places using longtitude and latitude
