Do you have a question about 'Smart Kids'?

We want your child to be a successful and a creative learner, so please take some time to browse the following Topics, so 'Smart Kids' provides your child with the best learning resources available.

With the 'Smart Kids' Curriculum what does a 3 year old learn? The Curriculum for a 3 year old includes the following sections - Colors, Shapes, Art and Craft, Reading, Opposites, Math, Language, and Community Helpers. Many activities will develop pre-reading and math skills. The activities are fun and enjoyable, capturing the imagination of an active, curious 3 year old child. No formal instruction of Reading is included in this Curriculum. It is important that a child's language development be nurtured through Rhymes, songs and Art.

What does a 4 year old learn? The Curriculum for a 4 year old has a strong emphasis on phonics and reading. All letters of the Alphabet are introduced, with many fun and challenging activities included. Recogniton of Numbers 1-20, simple addition, measuring and matching, are the core skills developed in the Math section. Children will make their own books, trace letters, and in the second part of the year, they will be introduced to three letter word blends. A monthly E-Book is also included in the 'Smart Kids' Curriculum for 4 year olds.

What if my child is advanced for his/her age? Parents are the first teachers of their child and only you know the strengths of your child. When deciding on which Curriculum to choose, age is always not the only criteria. Some children may be very advanced in reading, or show interest in math concepts, which may be included in a Curriculum above your child's age. After you choose a particular age level based Curriculum, you may change to another during the month, if you find your child is experiencing difficulties or requires further challenges.

What does a 5 year old learn? The 5 year old Curriculum, assumes the child recognizes all letters of the Alphabet, has good Math and counting skills and already has a good reading sight-word knowledge. The Phonics program includes 3 and 4 letter rhyming words, as well as a list of the most common reading words. For some Subjects - Science and Social Studies, your child will work on a Project over a couple of weeks. You will receive a downloadable E-Book every week, which reinforces the words already learned. Flashcards, Worksheets and Test Sheets are all included in the 'Smart Kids' Curriculum for 5 year olds. Math skills include - subtraction, addition, time, money, and measurement.

What will my 4th Grader learn? The 4th Grade Reading Curriculum is Literature based and all students will receive a monthly book, which is the basis for all language arts activities for the month. Students will write Journals, letters, essays, Projects, Poems, to develop good writing skills. A Spelling Contract is downloaded every Monday and the child will work on the activities all week, finishing with a Spelling Test on Friday. The Math Curriculum includes a strong emphasis on Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction and also will be tested at the end of each week's work. Grammar is also presented through fun and challenging Worksheets. Both Social Studies and Science require research skills, note-taking and presentations. Very often, the child will work on a Topic over a number of weeks, culminating in presenting the information in a variety of ways.

How do I structure our day? 'Smart Kids' provide the activities for the day and it is totally up to you as to how you present the information. Print this Calendar, to remind your child what Subjects are studied on a particular day. You do not have to complete all the work every day. Sometimes, you may set the work as Homework or choose to keep the work for a later date. It is important that progress is monitored closely, ensuring the child experiences success and is not discouraged by the learning process.

What resources do I need? When you send us your monthly Subscription, we will email you the URL where all the resources are accessed. The Calendar shows what Subject is being studied and by clicking on the link, you can download the pdf. (portable document file) file or be directed to a section of our web site for Instructions. You can get the free Acrcobat Reader at www.adobe.com

We suggest you make a Useful Box where your child can find materials useful for the various activities. See a list of recommended resources to have in your Useful Box.

What if my child finds the work difficult? Many of the learning activities require repetition. When a particular activity is included once on the calendar, it does not mean that the child is never exposed to that skill again. If your child is having difficulty with a particular skill, go over the basic concepts with him / her. Give your child more examples and allow him/her to repeat the Worksheet, game, reading exercise etc., as many times as he /she needs to. Our staff at 'Smart Kids' are available 5 days a week, to discuss any problems you may have with the Curriculum. As mentioned above, you may change to another grade level, if your child needs the extra help with a subject area. These early years are where the foundations are laid. We recommend that you talk to your child and listen to what they say. Ask them to explain their difficulty and together we can work to see your child succeed.

What shall I do if my child finds the work too easy? If your child is not finding the work challenging enough, please contact us and we will change you over to another Curriculum. Please read above to see what each age / grade level will learn, so you can determine your child's needs. Beginning January, 2002, we will also provide 'Challenge Me' activities with the monthly Curriculum for children who would benefit from further enrichment learning activities.

How do I record what my child is learning? With each monthly Curriculum, we include a 'Learning Outcomes' Sheet, which explains the skills developed week by week. This way, you have a permanent record of the Subject areas and content, of your child's learning. We are happy to assist in grading and assessment of your child's work, if required. Email us for more details.

How do I keep track of all the Subjects and Worksheets? We suggest you buy a Folder for each Subject area and use our Printable Labels, so your child can file and organize their own learning Worksheets, and Projects etc.,

What Reading materials do I need? For the 3-5 year old Curriculums you will receive downloadable E-Books for Reading. Just click on the Calendar link and print the Cover and Pages of the book. Staple the pages together and your child is ready to begin reading their very own Book.

How do I view the Worksheets? Most of the learning Worksheets are viewed with Acrobat reader. You can get this free Reader at:

What is the weekly Review Sheet? Most learners will receive a weekly Review Sheet to download on Friday. This is a very important tool in their learning. They will reflect on what they learned during the work, write the things they enjoyed and determine what they can improve on for the next week. This develops an understanding by the child that they are responsible for their own learning. This Review Sheet and a piece of their best work can be filed into a Portfolio, to make a year long record of their learning.
