Reception

Time, Continuity and Change - Cultural Heritage (1.1-1.3)

1.1 - Identifies differences between their life and the lives of other generations in their society and explains some reasons for this:

  • Use this Interview Form for children to interview Grandparents etc., Use these Interview Results, to present short talks about how life has changed over the years. Display results and photos of the Interviewee.

  • Make a Collage from magazine pictures of our Cultural Heritage.

1.2 - Presents events and life stages in sequence.

  • Make a Family Collage. Use these ideas about roles in a family.

  • Celebrate cultural diversity in the class and draw their own favorite celebration. Use our Holiday Resources for research information.

1.3 - Identifies and values aspects of environments, and of family and community ways of life, that have endured or changed, and makes predictions about the future in relation to these.

  • Invite people from different ethnic groups to share and talk about their life and country of origin.

  • Discuss the contribution of different ethnic groups - Food, Festivals, Stories.

  • Explore a Unit on Space, and have particular focus on predicting what Space will look like in the future.

  • Students draw and write about their favorite time when family comes together to celebrate. Students share their drawings with the class, by making a Class Book.

Place, Space, and Environment - Places and People (1.4-1.6)

1.4 - Explains and communicates how people interact and identify with environments.

  • Using art resources, students design a place of the future. Teachers can include each 'place' in a Power point presentation for the class to view.

  • Teachers introduce students to the Doors to the World Project. Students take photos using a digital camera, and submit their photo in the Project.

1.5 - Represents and categorises features of places and resources, using maps, contextual language and models.

  • Students walk around the school environment, observing spaces, and the environment. A Map is drawn of the enironment using a simple key.

1.6 - Participates actively in projects to show understanding of the importance of caring for local places and natural environments.

  • Students make Posters and Signs to show others how to care for a local area.

Societies and Cultures

1.7 - Understands that, although all people are unique, they also have characteristics in common, and contribute in a variety of ways to their local and wider communities.

  • Teachers connect with a classroom at Class Connect, to increase awareness of other people's culture and traditions.

  • Students complete a K-W-L sheet about their local area. Research one aspect in groups, and give a short talk about their findings.

1.8 - Listens to and retells local Aboriginal stories and stories from cultures other than their own, and explains their relevance for Australians.

1.9 - Demonstrates a capability to see and value points of view other than their own.

Social Systems

1.10 - Describes the meaning of ‘needs’ and ‘wants’, and identifies how people cooperate in society to meet current and future needs.

Have Guest Speakers present their working day to the students.

Students draw a picture about their Mom's or Dad's work.

Students complete the Needs and Wants Worksheet.

Using art materials, students construct a small town. Label services and people living in the town.

Print out this Village Template and brainstorm ways it helps up with our needs.

1.11 - Identifies the sources of some goods and services, and can explain the ways our daily living depends on them.

Discuss the work of mums, dads and carers (volunteer work, paid work, work in the home).

Invite guest speakers to talk about their specific work (paid and unpaid).

Walk around the local community to identify different community groups, facilities and services (eg post office, shops, homes, church and playgrounds).

With friends, negotiate which kind of community worker they would like to research. Present the information as a project showing how the worker helps to meet the community needs. Consider how the job the worker does might change over time.

Examples of evidence towards achievement of outcomes

 

1.12 - Takes an active part in making decisions to achieve goals while listening to, negotiating, and cooperating with others, and showing awareness of rights, responsibilities and rules.
