In Space week the child's natural curiosity about outer  space is enriched. opportunities to discover presented  aspects of space have been presented so that the child may  be stimulated to play at home and beyond.

 

Earth, Moon, Planets Revolve

Songs

Make round  shape stars from crumpled foil  and hang them on a clothes  line galaxy.

Make a  spinning top from a paper  plate and pencil.

Night and Day

Go out side at night time. listen  to noises and try to identify  animal sounds.  Make Frogs out of dough mixed  with green food colouring.  Make a moon out of paper  mache by covering a balloon  with newspaper and paste  Use of milk: experiment using  milk-make milkshakes, yoghurt,  butter, junket, custard, milk ice  blocks, ice-cream.  Play a sequence game about the  day's routine using cards. The  children could draw pictures on  cards or paste pictures from  magazines.  A suggested sequence:  Card 1: sun coming up.  Card 2: child waking up.  Card 3: child playing.  Card 4: child eating breakfast.  Card 5: child cleaning teeth.  Card 6: child getting dressed  (and continue through child's  day).  Have fun mixing up sequence.

Learning Activities

Astronauts and Exploration

Go outside and look at the  moon and stars in the night  sky. Sing a favorite star song.  Play a game to develop the  concept of the earth going  around the sun. Use the song  'The Farmer in the Dell'.  Children run around a central  child ( the sun ) to the words  'The Earth goes 'round the  Sun'. Take turns to be the sun.

Create a star-filled  sky out of a black cardboard  box with lots of holes by  shining a torch in the back.

Make a night / day picture on  large hessian pieces by stitching  on pre-cut felt shapes

  a. Night time picture on  black hessian. Add moon,  stars, tree, owl and so on.

  b. Day time picture on light  blue hessian. Add sun,  flowers, grass and so on  Encourage children to think and  talk about dreams  Paint images on pieces of  blotting paper using watery paint

 

Songs  Roly Poly Ever So Slowly  Trees  Do You Put You Hat On.....?  Bananas In Pyjamas  Out into Space

Make a pretend rocket out of  cardboard boxes and silver foil  and take your favourite toy on a  journey.  Collect interseting bits and  pieces from a garden or park  and make a collage or sculpture.  Make a binoculars using  cardboard cylinders. Join  together by masking tape. Attach  string using stapler. Use for  dramatic play, indoors or outdoors

  Use taped electronic music to set  a scene for moving in slow  motion as if in outer space. Vsit a local observatory and  discover a telescope. The  observatories in major Australian  cities have wonderful information  about star watching, Aboriginal  beliefs and much more  Explore the concept of gravity.  Provide soft toys and jolly  jumpers - toys can bounce  around in jolly jumpers and  children will be able to  experiment with weightlessness  through movement. Older  children will enjoy throwing up  balls into the air and knocking  objects off a wall.
