Using Portfolios in the Classroom

Students can reflect on the week's work and complete a Portfolio sheet, to take home to parents. Download Portfolio sheets for your classroom >>>>>>>>

Portfolios accomplish goals set by teachers for learners such as developing critical thinking and self-reflection skills; becoming aware of their own thinking; managing and evaluating their own learning. Portfolios help teachers to motivate students by helping them discover who they are as learners, and help boost their self concept

  • Portfolios are a good way to collect information about students in order to document what they know and are able to do.

  • Portfolios enable teachers to use all four purposes for assessment: keeping track, checking up, finding out and summing up.

  • Children are often unaware of how much they are changing. Parents and teachers who see children every day may also fail to recognize how far students have come. Portfolios allow all of them to see growth over time.

  • Portfolios keep the assessment process as part of daily teaching.

  • Portfolios present assessment information to parents in a different way because when and if we give parents the opportunity to participate in portfolio assessment, they become more aware of what to observe and how their child learns.
