This list was originally compiled by Bernice E. Cullinan, noted reading specialist, for READ ACROSS AMERICA, the reading initiative celebrating the 75th anniversary of National Children's Book Week. The list is meant to introduce children, and the adults who care for them, to newer books in the field of children's literature. Well-known classics -- such as Beatrix Potter's The Adventures of Peter Rabbit, Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, A.A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh, Margaret Wise Brown's Goodnight Moon, and E.B. White's Charlotte's Web, for example -- have not been included, as they are reasonably well-known, enduring masterpieces that every child should know. If you've not yet introduced your child to them, start today! Fun and Games HERE!! |

Library Ideas to Motivate Readers |

Book Character Dress-Up |
Birthday Club |
|
|
1. Encourage each student to dress as a character from a favorite book read this year. (Stress that TV characters will not be accepted.) Teachers and aides should also take part. 2. Costumes should be planned for comfort so they may be worn all day. 3. The title and author of the book from which the character comes should be attached to the costume. 4. Each class should have a secret ballot to elect the costume that will represent their class for the final judging. 5. Originality and creative use of household items/scraps should determine winners. 6. Classroom winners will assemble in the media center at (...time) for final judging by impartial judges (community personality, school board member, principal) 7. The winner(s) and prizes will be announced on School Library Media Day |
Send out a flyer to parents telling them that they can donate a new book during their child's birthday month. Their child would get their picture taken holding the book & placed on a special poster in the library. Their book would have a special book plate pasted inside stating that this book was donated by the child and......the child would have the opportunity to be the first one to check out the book. We had a "suggested book list" attached to the original letter. This also went out to the teachers who also could participate. We told the summer birthday kids that they could choose any month they wanted to participate. The second idea is extremely successful. We told all kids to bring in their books they don't read anymore. In return--they received special coupons for each hardback & softback book. We did this for 1 month. Then we held a book sale using the books brought in. The kids came during their recess & lunch time with their "special coupons" and used them to buy books.
