The Student with Weak Organizational Skills |
PROBLEM
Has the student copied down the correct assignment? If not, this may indicate poor far-point visual copying skills, suggesting weak short term visual memory skills.
SOLUTION
Allow sufficient time for the student to copy assignment or work
Acknowledge the difficulty and provide assignment on a piece of paper
Discuss homework task orally in addition to writing assignments on the board
Allow students to copy from classmates homework book
PROBLEM
Does the student exhibit difficulties organizing written work? This is a skill that needs to be developed. Poor written work does not always mean a lazy attitude. Students may have difficulty translating oral language into written language.
SOLUTION
Demonstrate ways to organize work on paper, show models etc.,
Allow students opportunities to practice and develop these skills
Develop outlining techniques
PROBLEM
Does the student work in a cluttered area?
Is he / she unable to find a book, paper etc.,?
SOLUTION
Discuss the problem with parents (chances are, the problem exists at home as well)
Encourage parents and student to create a clutter free environment for homework, to remove all distractions.
Establish that clutter-free is COOL!
PROBLEM
Does the student have difficulty organizing his / her time?
SOLUTION
Help prioritize assignments and discuss time frames
Have students "time' individual assignments, set time goals and keep track of actual time required to complete tasks
Schedule breaks if necessary
For long range assignments, assist students with developing time frames.
Provide a Calendar with due dates for papers and assignments
