Internet Educator of the Month Award.
Gigglepotz.com is pleased to announce Sharon Sumner as the winner of the Internet Educator Award for March, 2001. Sharon Sumner is a 4th Grade teacher at Sullivan Elementary School, Missouri. This year her fourth grade classroom, as well as a third grade classroom, was selected through a grant program to be part of the State of Missouri eMINTS project. This project delivers a high-speed Internet connection to the classroom and places technology on the teachers and students desks while attempting to determine whether eliminating the technology barriers traditionally experienced by schools can change teaching styles and strategies and improve student performance. . Sharon Sumner's class have participated in several collaborative projects with schools across the country and Canada, including Monster Exchange, and The Groundhog Project. They have email pals with other classrooms in Missouri and Tennessee. Sharon has been working with the Internet as a part of her classroom since 1996. In that time, she has developed many ways to use it most effectively .She uses the Internet as a curriculum organizer. This year, she developed an online curriculum resource guide that highlights Internet sites that fit the State of Missouri Show-Me standards. This includes the curriculum scope for her district's fourth grade. From this, Sharon Sumner created online lesson plans and units and stores them on this site. To help the other 4th grade teachers in the school to begin infusing technology into their curriculum, she created a site just for them. This site includes such things as the weekly spelling lists and ideas for them to use.Sharon uses online communication tools to connect school and home through interactive sites geared to my students' and parents' needs. The photos page is an especially effective tool to allow parents to "see" into the classroom. "I have created an online lesson plan entitled "Missouri History: A Living Museum." In this lesson, students research famous people from Missouri, sharing the information learned by portraying that person in a "Living Museum." This online plan, posted on my Missouri History Curriculum Resource Guide site, is complete with checklists, rubrics, parent letter, and a Filamentality web page I designed to guide the students in their research. It also contains an online portfolio of a previous class museum in progress. All of this is available for parents, students, and other teachers to access from their own computers. I print and send home all needed information. I've had parents tell me how wonderful it is to know exactly what the students need to complete this project. So many times their children come home with vague descriptions about what they need to do. This online plan has been very helpful to parents as they now have the necessary information to help their child. Since this plan is posted on the Internet, I have had many positive comments from other teachers, thanking me for sharing it with them. "I have given workshops, written articles, and tried to spread the word as much as possible so that others can see the quality of learning that can take place in a technology rich curriculum. Students are becoming the masters of their own learning. They are not just sitting idly by as teachers teach. They are experiencing their learning. My students are becoming experts in creating PowerPoints and Microsoft Word documents.. I am very proud of the recent WebQuest they completed....but not half as proud as they were of a job well done!."
