Internet Educator of the Month Award.
The Internet Educator of the Month - February, 2001 Gigglepotz.com is pleased to announce Mr. David Leahy as the winner of the Internet Educator Award for February, 2001. David Leahy is a 4th Grade teacher at Greenway Elementary School, Beaverton School District. Visit his class website and his educational site for teachers. With his students he publishes student work on the Internet. Their Body Systems Brochure page has had over 10,000 visitors. His class have published graphs (AppleWorks), artwork, writing, multimedia reports (HyperStudio), and web of ideas (Inspiration). The work published on the web is from the daily classroom curriculum. Students also understand the high expectations and standards that have been set by previous classes of Mr. Leahy's. The wonderful Virtual Underground Railroad Quilt has been visited by over 60,000 people. Almost 20,000 people have visited On the Oregon Trail Our class has risen to the challenge by working toward excellence, cooperating with others by assisting with peer editing, and demonstrating their knowledge and understanding in a very public way. The Internet is used as an everyday source of information in his classroom. Students have used the Internet to research Rocks, the Human Body, Northwest Coast Peoples, Animals and the Oregon Trail. The Internet is also used as a Source of Educational Activities by his 4th Grade students, Students have participated in a Webquest (Animal Webquest), a Web Inquiry (Preparing the Way), Virtual Tours, and Choose Your Own Adventures (a variety of Lewis & Clark adventures). They have practice math (Math Baseball, Soccer Shootout and Fraction Frenzy), grammar (Grammar Gorilla and Sink or Swim), learned about art (A. Pintura Art Detective and Art Safari) and science (Build Your Own Food Webs). The Internet allows students to work at their own pace, collaborate with others, understand audience, gain appreciation for the value of peer editing, and to receive valuable feedback and criticism for their work.
