How to develop good study habits in Elementary students:

1. It is important to have a set time for homework. Usually after dinner in the evening is a good time. Students need to develop the habit of doing homework at the same time each night.

2. Encourage your child to take all the homework books out of the backpack and place them in an organized pile on the table.

3. Set aside a table or desk where there are no distractions of a tv or video games.

4. Trade off recreational activities for when homework is completed. (eg - drawing, tv, video games etc)

5. Take a close interest in what homework is being done and sign the Homework Folder if required.

6. Make a Monthly Calendar of Tests and Projects that are due. Post the Calendar near the homework area. If Projects are due in 2-3 weeks, develop a timeline with your child. Decide when aspects of the Project will be completed.

7. Ask your child to check off the Homework as it is completed. This way, both you and the students can see the work that still needs completing.

8. When one subject is finished, place the books back into the backpack for the morning. This way, books will not be left home or lost.

9. Talk to your child about their Goals for the quarter. Remind them of how they will achieve them.

10. Be sure to have the Proof reading Sheet posted near the homework area. Have your child refer to it often.

11. Occasionally a "homework free night" will be given, but for most nights, your child will have homework to complete.
