Chapter One - The Parker Family
Jemima Beatrice Parker entered the
world on July 1st, 2000, amid excitement and disbelief. Lots of other
babies were also born that day, but none quite like the new addition
to the Parker family.
For after 3 boys, Mr. and Mrs.
Parker at last, had their long-awaited girl.
Mrs. Parker had dreamed of tiny,
pink jackets and dainty pink bonnets, for as long as she could
remember. It was not that she didn't love her boys, but there was
something special about a girl. Little did Mrs. Parker know, just how "special"!
The boys, Jack, Lachlan and Henry
still remember the first time they stole a glimpse of their little
sister (or JB as they call her now.) Their father, Mr. Parker had
woken them up late one night. Jack, who was the youngest boy had
fallen asleep reading his favorite comic. He woke first, and heard
scurrying out in the hallway. Bleary eyed, he sat up and brushed his
blond hair from his forehead. He squinted and could just make out the
shape of his father entering the room. The lights were on in the
hallway, and he could hear his Mother bustling through the room next
to him. Mr. Parker crept over to Jack and began to bundle him up into
his arms.
"What's happening, Dad?"
mumbled Jack.
His father, beaming, though still
looking a little anxious, replied: "It's time, Jack. Mommy is
going to have the baby." Jack, still trying to comprehend what
was happening, rubbed his eyes and smiled weakly. He wondered why
babies pick the most inconvenient times to arrive?
By now, Lachlan and Henry were
awake. Lachlan the eldest of the Parker boys helped Henry gather his
suitcase, which had been ready for just this night. Mrs. Parker had
prepared her boys well, for she knew that when the time finally came,
Mr. Parker,(God bless him) might be in such a fluster, that he may
forget where the boys clothes were.
The three boys, with suitcases in
hand, were still trying to comprehend what had got them up so late in
the night. Henry complained, that he didn't want a sister anyway and
was quite convinced that this baby was going to be trouble. Being six
years old, with red hair like his mother, Henry was the fiery one of
the family and always spoke his mind. Lachlan hushed him, as Mr.
Parker led the three children. into the kitchen, where Mrs. Parker
was drinking a cup of tea. She looked calm and hugged the boys one
after the other. "Now, boys Aunt Beatrice will be looking after
you for a few days, while I am in hospital with your new baby
sister". The boys had been told a few months prior, about the
girl that was about to enter into their lives, so it really was no
surprise to them. But who could have imagined the surprises that lay ahead. |
