'Ooey Dewey Game'
Objective: For students to become familiar with the Dewey Decimal System. Game: Students are divided into two teams. One student from each team is asked to take their starting positions. They may stand anywhere in the NON-FICTION section of the Library to begin with. The Teacher then calls out : "Ooey Dewey...and then a CALL NUMBER..eg 300. The two students then must go to the 300 shelf and take out a book with 300 on the spine and raise their hand. The first student to raise their hand tells the teacher the call number and the title of the book. They receive ONE point for their team. The game continues with two new students coming from each team. The students are also given BONUS points by answering general questions about the shelving system. e.g What books were found in 900? Other Rules: If a book falls of the shelf, a point is deducted from the team. If a student runs to the shelf, a point is deducted. This game is extremly effective in informing students about where books are located. They soon become very proficient at locating specific areas of the Library. |
