Name of Teacher : Tracy Scaramella Country : USA Oregon Grade : 6th Grade Name of School : Gordon Russell Middle School Description Iwould like to connect with another middle school classroom. I am looking for a partner school from a Spanish speaking country; preferably in Latin America. My students speak only English, but I speak Spanish as a second language. I am interested in connecting for two reasons. The first is that I would like my class to have the opportunity to share facts and descriptions about their own community and society with another class. Our focus this year in Social Studies is to study how the resources and geography of a region or place affect the people who live there. I think that by researching and collecting this informmation to share and compare with another class outside their cultural and lingual experiences will help them to better understand their own environment. I am also interested in using machine translation to teach students more about how to communicate with people who do not speak their language. I am using Amikai's machine translation. It is free, but only works on an elementary level. For example, it cannot translate idioms, and garbles sentences with awkward structure or ambiguous references. Using machine translation, students can study a foreign language (I am interested, right now, only in Spanish-English and English-Spanish) and also learn to become stronger writers in their own language. They also get a virtual experience of how difficult it can be to be understood or to understand. Our school year starts in September. I would like to develop a partnership as soon as possible! I am flexible, open to new ideas, and eager to share project ideas and lesson plans with other teachers.
Name of Teacher : Marissa Abraham Country : Toronto, Ohio Grade : 6, 7, & 8 Name of School : St. Francis School Description : I would like to have my students write to pen pals, via snail mail, for my school has a budget limit, and since we are a Catholic school, we are not funded by the US government to have access to the internet. I would like my students to correspond at least once a month, or maybe twice (in a period of 12-14 weeks.) I would prefer the 6th graders to write to schools in Europe for they will be studying ancient civilizations ie... Egypt, Romans, etc...(any country is okay.) I would like my 7th graders to find someone in Japan, or China. And my eighth graders ( 10 of them) would be able to write to any country, preferably outside the U.S. My Students' ages range from 12-14.
Name of Teacher : LaTarchau Harris Country : USA Shreveport, Louisiana Grade : 5th grade Name of School : Caddo Heights Elementary Description : I am a math, science, and social studies teacher from the USA and would like for my students to meet students from another country. I prefer 5th or 6th graders. My students are between the ages of 10-11. School starts on August 13. I will have 20-25 students. Since we do not have internet in the classroom, I would like for my students to be able to write letters and send them by mail. If you are interested, please email me and we can make arrangements. My students would love to meet people from other countries. They are basically low income, african american students. Meeting new people will boost up their self-esteem and help improve their writing skills.
Name of Teacher : Mrs. Tina M. Mull Country : U.S.A., Ohio Grade : 5th Grade Name of School : Damascus Elementary School Description : I teach 5th and 6th grade math, science, and health. Although I don't teach the language arts, I think it's important for kids to write. Perhaps we could write discussing various science, math, and health topics that are being studied. I would prefer to use only the 5th grade class, but would not have a problem using the 6th graders also. The 6th grade class that I will have for next year has 29 students. (Give or take a few by the time school starts.) The 5th grade class that I will have has, I think, 24 students. I have not tried the pen pal thing since I began teaching just the math and science, but I remember how much my students looked forward to the pen pal letters prior to that. Even if we do this just for the writing experience, that's fine. Tina

Foshay Learning Center, Description : I teach children whose primary/home language is Spanish, and so I would like for my students to communicate with other English Language learners, primarily, but I would appreciate any sixth grade correspondence for my students.
Name of Teacher : Nicole Gavin Country : Baltimore, Maryland USA Grade : 6 Name of School : Curtis Bay Elementary Description : We are an inner city school in Baltimore. There are approximately 400 students in our school. My 6th grade class has 28 students. I am looking for a great clss to exchange ideas on reading or math.
