NEW! Oh
The Places You'll Go
Mrs. Coates and her 2nd graders
have written the important things about their own city. As a class,
they decided that they liked the idea of a peaceful little city as
being the most important thing about Berlin. "We chose the other
sentences from a list of ideas that had been brainstormed. Then they
each wrote an acrostic
poem about Berlin. Students also drew pictures of their city.
This project integrated reading, writing and social studies standards."

Hi Mrs.
Jamieson and Class,

In our country we have a
holiday called Halloween. It is celebrated on October 31st.
The kids all dress up in costumes and then go door to door collecting
candy from their neighbors. When the people come to the door, the
children say "Trick or Treat". We also carve funny and
scary faces into hollowed out pumpkins. They are called jack-o-lanterns.
Here
is a picture of a roadside stand that is selling pumpkins right now.
We also have a Halloween
party at school. The kids bring their costumes to school and then at
the end of the day they put them on and we have treats and games.
Sometimes we have a costume parade in our gym. It is one of the best
classroom parties. We thought you might enjoy some of the Halloween
sites that we have gathered on our web site. We like the Halloween
tic tac toe, the riddles and jokes, and Black Cat. We have just
started the Bat Web Quest. Maybe
some of you would like to try the web quests.
We couldn't believe that you wrote
already! Didn't you just get back from a two week holiday? You are
really awesome pen pals!

Hi Debbie,
The class discussed our connection
and thought we should send a toy koala and call it Koala Lou which is
a really beautiful story written by a local writer called Mem
Fox. She has written lots of wonderful
books for young readers. Regards Sheryl

Dear Mrs Coats
and class,
Buddy has
only been with us for 3 days and already he is off interstate with
Matthew. He is going to a big football match in Melbourne, the
capital of Victoria. He will be going with Matthew and his parents to
2 matches. Matthew and Mrs. Jamieson both barrack( you would say
root) for a team called PortPower. They are a team from South
Australia. Their colours are teal, silver and black. I have cut some
pictures from the papers of football players during the games. I
think you will be suprised to see how different the clothing is from
your football and how tough our game is compared to your football.
Matthew has promised to take some photos so we will send them to you
if we can.
Cheers
from Mrs. Jamieson |

NEW!
Hi Mrs. Jamieson and Class,

We had such a wonderful
surprise yesterday. A large package arrived from Australia in the
morning. We want to thank you and your students so much for sending
it. We were very excited, so we went over to the reading corner to
open it together.

The children were so thrilled to
find wrapped presents for each of them in the big envelope. Everyone
had to wait until each child had their present and then they all
opened them together. They absolutely loved the Australian pens and
kangaroo stickers. They were so excited about trying out the new
pens, that they asked if they could write letters to their pen pals
using them. Of course, I let them. They worked very hard on Christmas
cards for all of your students. They are beautiful. We found a
surprise to send to each of your students, too. However, the present
will not get in the mail until tomorrow which will be December 6th. I
am afraid it will not arrive before Christmas. Will there be someone
there to distribute our cards and gifts to our pen pals after your
Christmas break? We know that Mrs. Jamieson will be changing schools,
so we are hoping that she will be able to arrange for someone to pass
out the "goodies" when you get back from your summer vacation.

Our class is busy preparing
for Christmas. We just put up a live pine tree in our class for
Christmas. Do you use pine trees as Christmas trees, too? Do you have
a tree in your classroom? Do you put on a concert for your parents
for Christmas? What songs do you sing if you do? We are looking
forward to talking with you about the ways you celebrate Christmas.
We are having unseasonably warm weather in Wisconsin this week.
Yesterday the temperature was 60 degrees. It felt like spring. We
noticed that Australia had some temperatures in the 90s! We are
guessing that you get to wear shorts in December. Are we right? Well,
have a great week!
Sincerely, Debbie Coats

Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to let you all know
that I am having a fabulous time in Wisconsin. The weather is getting
colder but the leaves are changing colors and it is a beautiful sight
everywhere you look.

Today I went on a field trip with
Mrs. Coats' class to the school forest. We spent half of the day
there and had lots of fun. We hiked, went on a scavenger hunt, looked
for signs of animal life, did leaf rubbings and a camouflage
activity. It was great. I miss you all, but Wisconsin is a great
place to visit. They tell me that I will be seeing snow pretty soon.
I am not so sure that I am going to like that! I will write again.

NEW
Dear Mrs. Coats and class, Guess what. I went on another
great weekend adventure with Mrs. Jamieson. I went right down near
the bottom of South Australia to a coastal place called Beachport. See
me at the beach. It is a small fishing village and right now it
is the crayfishing season.
The southern ocean sweeps onto the
coast. Can you imagine being able to see the southern ocean. I went
for a drive along the coast. Look at me
playing in the sand and playing hide
and seek. I could see where the waves
have eroded the rocks. Mrs. Jamieson told me that the waves get
very high and rough during the winter months and during big storms.I
hope you all like the pictures of me on my trip.
Love from Buddy |
Buddy has joined our class and is
already out and about. His first weekend here, saw him on a Qantas
flight, (see him
on the plane) with his pal Matthew, to
Melbourne to the headquarters of Aussie rules football to watch his
adopted team PortPower play.
