The Olympic Venues for Sydney, 2000

As the world focuses on next year's Olympic Games in Sydney, this year will see a preview of several Games events, including world class hockey games stage at the Olympic Hockey Centre. The Centre has undergone a $15.5 million upgrading. It will feature a main competition pitch, warm-up pitch and a grandstand with seating capacity for 1575 spectators as well as facilities for athletes and officials. All 28 Olympic sports will have at least one test event, and this year Sydney will host a total of 47 Test Events in the lead up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Olympic Park Railway Station

The planning and delivery of the Sydney 2000 Games' transport services and networks rests with the Olympic Roads and Transport Authority. The $95 million Olympic Park Railway Station opened in March 1998 and was tested during the 1998 Royal Easter Show in Sydney's largest public transport operation. More than one million people or 88 per cent of show visitors chose to arrive at Homebush Bay by public transport, compared to around 40 per cent in previous years at the old Sydney showgrounds location.

THE OLYMPIC SUPERDOME

An artist's impression of the Sydney SuperDome - Australia's largest and most environmentally friendly indoor arena. The SuperDome will be the centre for Olympic Basketball and Gymnastics in 2000. The new complex is one of Australia's most versatile indoor entertainment and sporting facilities, and will be used for rock concerts, operas, circus and ice shows, and trade conventions. The SuperDome will also provide a future base for the Sydney Kings basketball team.

STADIUM AUSTRALIA - CENTRE PIECE FOR THE 2000 OLYMPICS

The construction timetable for the 2000 Olympic games sees all of Sydney's competition venues completed this year, including the Stadium Australia. The stadium will have a capacity for 110,000 spectators during the Games Also this year, a series of major sporting events in Sydney will give organisers the opportunity to test logistics. All 28 Olympic sports will have at least one test event, and Sydney will host a total of 47 Test Events in the lead up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

ARCHERS PREPARE FOR THE SYDNEY OLYMPICS

The Sydney International Archery Park features a distinctive, twisting roof that provides shade and protection for competitors and spectators. It houses an archery field, a 100-metre long pavilion and nine modular rooms clad with recycled hardwood and fitted with translucent ceilings designed to provide natural light and ventilation. The facility has been hailed as a centre of excellence for archery in Australia by the President of the International Archery Federation, Mr Jim Easton, who said that it was 'very important that this beautiful facility be left as an Olympic legacy of the Sydney 2000 Games'.

 Sailing is one of the four Olympic sports spectators can watch free of charge.
