Harry Potter is the buzz that started in England and spread across the World! He has captured the imaginations of adults and children alike. The main character, Harry Potter, is an unassuming child who discovers his magical powers and trains at the Hogwarts School for witches and wizards. Each book is filled with a fantasy adventure that takes the reader through a world of magic, monsters, heroes and villains. J.K. Rowling's wry sense of humor gives the storylines light moments and keeps them from becoming too frightening to younger readers.

This list was originally compiled by Bernice E. Cullinan, noted reading specialist, for READ ACROSS AMERICA, the reading initiative celebrating the 75th anniversary of National Children's Book Week. The list is meant to introduce children, and the adults who care for them, to newer books in the field of children's literature. Well-known classics -- such as Beatrix Potter's The Adventures of Peter Rabbit, Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, A.A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh, Margaret Wise Brown's Goodnight Moon, and E.B. White's Charlotte's Web, for example -- have not been included, as they are reasonably well-known, enduring masterpieces that every child should know. If you've not yet introduced your child to them, start today! Please note: When different from the illustrator, author's name appears in parentheses following the book title. Fun and Games HERE!!
