Gymnastics: Latvia's Igors Vihrovs wins gold
Latvia's Igors Vihrovs stunned the gymnastics world on Sunday by taking the Olympic gold medal in the men's floor event: his first major championship win and Latvia's first ever Olympic gold medal. Russia's Elena Zamolodtchikova, a late replacement for team mate Svetlana Khorkina, made the most of her opportunity to claim the vault gold medal at the Olympic gymnastics apparatus finals, while Romanian police officer Marius Urzica won the gold in the men's pommel horse. Russia's Svetlana Khorkina overcame an Olympic Games filled with bitter disappointment by successfully defending her gymnastics uneven bars gold medal and Atlanta silver medallist Szilveszter Csollany (HUN) won the gold medal in the Men's Rings apparatus final.

Hockey: Australia stays on course for double
Defending women's champions Australia continued their impressive march towards back-to-back Olympic titles with a 3-0 win over New Zealand on Sunday. Meanwhile Great Britain and Canada draw in other hockey news.

Rowing: Britain take rowing's 'blue riband'

Athletics: Kliugin wins gold in high jump
Sergey Kliugin of Russia won the men's high jump gold at the Sydney Olympic Games on Sunday as world record holder Javier Sotomayor of Cuba, back from a drugs ban, just missed out. Kliugin was the only athlete to clear 2.35 metres, while six others managed 2.32m, Sotomayor taking the silver on countback after missing fewer previous jumps. The bronze went to Abderrahmane Hammad of Algeria.

Wrestling: Titanic struggle in Greco-Roman
It was a battle to the bitter end in the Greco-Roman 97kg division wrestling at the Exhibition Centre on Sunday, while Poland's two Olympic champions struggled during the opening session of the tournament in other wrestling news.

SYDNEY 2000

Australian Sport: Anything is Possible
Australian sports refuse to be lumped into just one category. Competitive team sports such as rugby and Australian Rules football are popular, but the country can't deny its love for the solo pleasures of surfing and golf. As for the nation's most prestigious sporting event — that's the Melbourne Cup, an annual horse race. Learn more about sports Down Under, where there's even a smattering of camel racing.

ATHLETES

Athlete Spotlight: Tara Nott (USA)
Tara Nott was working for the Atlanta Organising Committee for the Olympic Games in 1995 when she started weight training as part of her fitness routine. Then she met the United States weight-lifting coaches through her work and decided to pursue it as a sport. Five years later, she's in the Games and she's won the gold medal.

Athlete Spotlight: Kerri-Ann Pottharst (Australia)
For years, Kerri-Ann Pottharst was the best attacker on the Australian women's indoor-volleyball team. Then, in 1992, after a decade on the international circuit, a severe knee injury led to months of rehabilitation. It might have ended her volleyball career, but instead, Pottharst headed for the beach — for beach volleyball.
