Despite trailing for most of the first half, the United States women's team bounced back to defeat a determined Russia 88-77 while Brazil proved too strong for Senegal, 82-48.

Svetlana Khorkina, one of the most elegant athletes ever to grace the Olympic arena, crashed to the mat doing a move that she invented on the uneven bars, while competition was hot in the Men's Individual All-Around final.

China's surprising run in women's hockey at the Sydney Olympic Games, which has seen them knock off two medal contenders, is remarkable considering there are only six teams in the country to draw players from. For Wednesday night's hockey results see here.

 

Rowing: Rowing legend Redgrave gets good draw
Britain's Olympic legend Steve Redgrave — aiming for his fifth Olympic rowing gold medal in Sydney — could hardly have asked for a better draw for the semi-finals of the coxless fours.

Tennis: Davenport celebrates Australia return
Top-seeded Lindsay Davenport celebrated her return to Australia and the Olympic stage by beating Paola Suarez of Argentina 6-2 6-2. The evening matches also saw some exciting results in the Men's and Women's singles First Round.

 

Weightlifting: Columbia wins first-ever gold medal
Maria Isabel Urrutia won Colombia's first-ever Olympic gold medal Wednesday, lifting a total of 245 kilograms, while Bulgarian weightlifter Ivan Ivanov has become the first competitor at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games to be stripped of a medal for cheating with drugs.
