Jane was very excited. Her school holidays had begun and she knew that it was time to get ready to go and stay with her grandparents as she did every year at Christmas time. Her grandma and grandpa lived many, many miles from the city on a sheep station. Jane spent all year at home with her dad who worked in an office in the city. Visiting the farm was her most favourite time of the year.
In her suitcase she had carefully packed the presents that she had picked out for her grandparents, her aunt, uncle and her two cousins Tom and Sally who would be joining her for Christmas Day.
Jane had written a letter to Santa with the other children in her class. This year she was not really sure what she wanted. She had thought about toys, games, clothes and all the usual things that children ask for but deep in her heart she knew that she wanted something unusual, maybe something that no one else had ever had before so she just asked Santa to bring her a surprise! Sitting in the train on the way to her grandparents she thought about the things that Santa might bring.
