Tom and Sarah could hardly believe the delight, which the snow-children had brought to their townspeople. Lakesville had a new vibrancy about it that hadn't been seen before. And of course it was Christmas Eve and Christmas wouldn't be the same without children - now would it?
The sound of laughter grew louder as the evening drew closer and the townspeople chatted away in the festive atmosphere dodging the occasional stray snowball or two.
Mr. Johnson gathered Tom, Sarah and the new children around him for a practice before the choir's annual carol service. He suggested calling to the houses in the neighborhoods nearby after a short recital in the town square. The children loved the idea, especially Tom who was fond of the occasional mince pie.
It was nearly eleven o'clock when they arrived at the O'Brien household at the outskirts of the town. Eileen and Séan O'Brien, who had moved from Ireland to settle in Lakesville more than ten years ago, were a well respected couple in the town. They lived in a large stately home but had no children to fill their many rooms.
They opened their doors in a welcoming manner. Mr. O'Brien had a tray of mince pies and hot chocolate to warm the children on the chilly evening. Mr. Johnson noticed the slightest hint of sadness in Mrs. O'Brien's facial expression as she greeted the children. Later a tear could be seen to appear during the children's rendition of The Wexford Carol.
