Chapter Three

Written by Elwood Primary School, Australia, (Teacher - Jenny Zimbachs)

Sarah and Tom placed the cookies in a basket, which they had decorated with red and green ribbon, and set off to deliver them.

As Sarah and Tom handed out their cookies, Sarah's eyes met with an old man's and tentatively she handed him her last cookie. It had been made out of left over dough and was very misshapen.

"G'day," he said, "this biscuit reminds me of when I was young."

"Why?" the children asked.

"It's shaped like Australia", replied the old man, " and it's just like the biscuits we would leave for Santa and his reindeers on Christmas Eve."

Dreamily he continued, "In Australia we never saw snow at Christmas. Christmas meant 6 weeks of school holidays. On Christmas Day you would rise early to see what presents were left in your Santa sack. You would hear your neighbours celebrating with a glass of champagne and snags on the BBQ while you sat down to a huge roast and plum pudding.

Later, you would go to the beach to keep cool in the sweltering temperatures."

With joyful eyes he turned to the children and said, "Thank you. Those happy memories are the best present anyone could ever receive."
