Chapter 6

6th Class, Mother of Divine Grace Primary School, Ballygall, Dublin 11, Ireland. Teacher Kay McCarthy

“I can’t believe it is really you. Grandma told us all about you and the real story of Christmas.”

Allie and Austin walked over to the dark stable. In the shadows they could see the ox and donkey standing quietly as if on guard.

“Hi Mary! Hi Joseph!” they yelled in excitement, forgetting all about the sleeping infant Jesus and their manners.

Mary did not look up at the two children, neither surprisingly did Joseph. Austin and Allie soon realised that neither Mary nor Joseph could see them.

They walked over to the infant Jesus who was now awake. He looked up and reached to touch Allie’s face gently.

“He can see us!” exclaimed Austin excitedly.

“Oh my, we forgot to bring a present for Jesus,” whispered Allie.

“What will we do?” asked Austin.

“Will I give him my guardian angel brooch?” asked Allie.

“But Nana gave that to you before she died.”

“I know, but I’m sure she would be proud of me for giving it to Baby Jesus.”

Suddenly there was a gentle whisper in the wind. It was the gumnut angel.

“Children, it’s time to go,” she said.

“Do we have to go, we want to stay to see the shepherds and the wise men,” pleaded Allie.

“I’m afraid so,” said the gumnut angel gently, “it’s time to go home to Texas.”

Allie laid her brooch carefully in the manger and kissed Jesus on the cheek. Austin said goodbye. They just had time to see Baby Jesus smile His thanks before, in the wink of an eye, they were whisked back to Texas.
